According to Deep Tide TechFlow news, on May 11, Cointelegraph reported that former UFC champion Conor McGregor recently proposed a plan to create a national Bitcoin reserve during his presidential campaign in Ireland, claiming that this move will "return power to the people." He stated that he would elaborate on this strategic idea in the upcoming X Spaces and invited Bitcoin community leaders to discuss the details, including The Pomp Podcast host Anthony Pompliano and Trump's crypto advisor David Bailey who have both responded.

McGregor announced his candidacy as an independent candidate in late March 2025, focusing on anti-immigration and crime-fighting issues. If he ultimately wins, Ireland is expected to join the ranks of countries like the United States, El Salvador, and Bhutan that have established Bitcoin reserves.

However, McGregor has recently been controversial due to being convicted in a civil sexual assault case (which he has appealed) and having been involved in a hate speech investigation. In addition, the REAL token project he supported failed its presale, raising only $390,000, which is below the minimum threshold of $1 million, and has fully refunded all investors.
