LATEST NEWS: Suspended Trump Tariffs Reinstated by U.S. Appeals Court Decision! What is Happening? Here are the Details
The comprehensive tariffs recently implemented by U.S. President Donald Trump were suspended by a federal court decision during the day. However, later that same day, the U.S. Court of Appeals temporarily halted that decision. With this step, the way was opened for the re-implementation of the tariffs.
The International Trade Court ruled that the legal basis for the tariffs imposed by Trump under the "emergency law" on nearly the entire world was insufficient. The court stated that the White House could not establish such a comprehensive trade policy within the framework of this law and thus suspended the tariffs.
Following the decision, the Trump administration quickly filed an appeal. The Court of Appeals stated in its announcement that it needed time to evaluate the appeals, ruling that the customs duties would remain in effect during this process.
White House Economic Advisor Kevin Hassett stated in an interview with Fox Business that they welcomed the decision, saying, "The temporary rulings made by activist judges will not derail our trade policy."
Trump's trade advisor Peter Navarro stated that if customs duties cannot continue to be enforced, these taxes could be reintroduced through other legal means.
Customs duties are at the center of Trump's foreign trade policy. The administration aims to bring major economic powers such as the European Union, China, India, and Japan to the table for new agreements with these duties.
