Elon Musk is building the largest supercomputer in the world for AI.
Elon Musk recently said he expects xAI to catch up with Google's OpenAI and DeepMind by the end of 2024.![]()
Billionaire Elon Musk has plans to build a supercomputer in collaboration with Oracle to power the next version of the artificial intelligence (AI) language model "Grok".
According to a report from The Information, quoting a presentation made to stakeholders of xAI, this project has been positioned as a "Gigafactory of Compute" to train and develop the next generation of the company's Grok AI system.
Elon Musk previously attempted to raise $4 billion at a valuation of $15 billion with the aim of researching and developing, increasing the number of GPUs from around 10,000 to 100,000.
After that, there was information that Elon Musk has raised the fundraising target to 6 billion USD with a valuation of 18 billion USD due to high interest from investors.
If the information from The Information is accurate, and if xAI intends to build a supercomputer, it is possible that this amount of money will be used to turn a cluster of 100,000 GPUs into a unified supercomputer architecture or a "Gigafactory of Compute," as xAI calls it, a reference to the Tesla factories currently referred to as "Gigafactories".
These actions were taken as Elon Musk began to raise expectations around the company's ability to ultimately build an AI that exceeds human cognitive capabilities.
Elon Musk said at the VivaTech 2024 conference in Paris that he believes AI will catch up with industry leaders like OpenAI and Google's DeepMind by the end of 2024. He further stated that he believes an AI system will be able to do everything better than humans by the end of 2025.
According to Elon Musk, such a system would be capable of replacing all human jobs, making us question our purpose. As he said, "if computers and robots can do everything better than you, then what is the meaning of your life?"
Musk admits that perhaps our role in the future will be "to give meaning to AI."
