Online passport application! Meet 3 conditions to avoid on-site queueing, new system starts on July 1.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan will promote a comprehensive online passport application and renewal system in July 2025. Citizens who are 18 years old and meet three conditions can complete the application at home, and the passport can be picked up in about ten working days. This move not only saves time but also adds a new piece to the government's digital governance puzzle. (Background: The New Taiwan Dollar skyrockets to the 28 range! (Additional Background: Thailand will fully open "tourism cryptocurrency payments," striving for digital transformation in the tourism powerhouse.) Starting from July 1, Taiwanese people will no longer have to wait in long lines to renew their passports. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expanded the "conditional online passport application and renewal" service, allowing eligible adults aged 18 and over to complete most of the process with just a click of their mouse at home. The Ministry has opened the previously limited online passport renewal service to everyone and promised that passports can be picked up within ten working days. Spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei explained: "We have moved the last mile of the passport renewal process online while ensuring information security." To apply for a new passport online, applicants must meet three conditions: they must be adults with registered household status in Taiwan, currently hold an expired passport, or have a passport with less than six months validity and not lost. The personal information on the new passport's data page must match that on the original passport, and no changes can be requested, nor can any additional signatures, transfers, or cancellations be made on the passport pages, such as for overseas identification or foreign aliases. Prepare the following: For online application via computer: valid natural person certificate (valid natural person certificate and IC card reader, or mobile device with the "Mobile Natural Person Certificate" APP installed). For online application via mobile: must first install the "Mobile Natural Person Certificate" APP. An electronic file of a passport photo taken within the last six months that meets passport specifications (passport photo specifications description). Note: Composite and mirrored (i.e., left-right reversed) photos are not accepted, and original application cases will not be refunded according to relevant regulations, and applicants must pay again to apply. Payment via credit card, cost 1300 NT dollars. Once everything is prepared, go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' "conditional online passport application and renewal system" to apply. Complete the process in three steps: log in, upload, and pick up the passport. The process is condensed into three steps. Insert the natural person certificate and log into the Department of Consular Affairs' "conditional online passport application and renewal system." Fill out the online form, upload a compliant recent white-background photo, and complete payment. For those residing on the main island of Taiwan, it will take ten working days after payment, and for those residing in the Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu areas, it will take fourteen working days after payment. Bring the receipt, identification card, and old passport to the selected office in the north, central, south, east, or Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan area to pick up the passport.
